Shatoma Pine Needle Baskets and Gourds
Hand made Baskets and Gourds
Beautiful, natural fragrant pine needles made into baskets.  All my baskets are handwoven by coiling using natural longleaf pine needles from Florida in the open or close coiled method.  Some of the needles are dyed using a natural dye and I use silk, cotton, raffia and sinew to stitch the designs.  Sometimes I add beads and beaded animals to my baskets for embellishment.

The gourds used are hard shell gourds grown in California, which are very thick and very good to carve and do pyrography on.  Some are also made into baskets using the longleaf pine needles.

Why use pine needles?  Pine needles have been used for as long as man has been around them, and found them useful for making mats, baskets and for adornment.  Gourds have been around equally as long as man has been able to find uses for them in all cultures.  They were used a long time before pottery ever existed.

I have been making baskets and gourds for a several years, selling them on ebay, to galleries and at shows.
